Post Nicky Haden - Advocacy in a note from Richard Fries
Last week Nicky Hayden, a superbike motorcycle world champion was killed while riding his beloved bicycle after a collision with a motor vehicle.

Earlier this month, Chris Froome, Tour de France superstar, was run off the road in a road rage incident. This left his bicycle demolished.

Typically we react to news of bicycle tragedies with a smug sense that somehow the rider must have done something wrong. But given the level of skill these riders had, the dialogue is changing.

Finally, Bicycling Magazine put out an issue that provides an extensive report on bicycle safety that provides a good synopsis of the work being done EVERY day by bicycle advocates.

And the YouTube program Global Cycling Network put aside their passion for the sport of cycling to deal with the issue of cycling safety. Global Cycling Network Safety Message And they are getting more involved in advocacy.

While statistically cycling is no more or less dangerous than ever, the profile of some incidents - be they in Britain or Boston, New Mexico or New York, Kalamazoo or Katmandu - have registered with the enthusiast community worldwide.

I believe bicycle enthusiasts worldwide have reached a breaking point. And right now YOU can make a difference.

We have a rising chorus, led by racers, coaches, and journalists, crying out for changes to be made. And they agree that the one thing we must do is support our local bicycle advocacy, groups.

I sent this to you because you are an alpha. You shape opinions in your office, your community, your family and your club.

If you live in Massachusetts, that is MassBike. We dearly need your support right now to help us pass legislation, improve enforcement, teach drivers and cyclists, and alter the culture of our roadways. We advocate we educate, we connect. But to keep going, we need you.

Please do one of three things:

1) Join MassBike by clicking here: JOIN MASS BIKE NOW

2) Donate to MassBike by clicking here:DONATE TO MASSBIKE NOW

3) Forward this e-mail to two friends whom you believe NEED to get involved.

Thank you in advance.

Richard Fries
